BACKGROUND                                                                                            

Advances in technology and access to information and communication that are so fast are also a decisive variant in the development of legal education. At the same time, if the values of integrity and morality of law students need to be formed as a basis for developing legal education in the future.

Legal scholars who only study legal formalism without understanding the reality of the dynamics of how law works, only produce a technocrat. Moreover, the issue of independent learning (merdeka belajar) in campus which was initiated by the Minister of Education of the Republic of Indonesia. Legal education in Indonesia is also marred by problems of the legal system itself and by a lack of communication between its constituent parts – the judiciary, the legislative, the bar, public prosecutors, and legal scholars.

How to develop law education that makes integrated law graduates in Indonesia should be the main factor in the renewal agenda. The goal is to equate the reality of science, technology development and community development. Therefore, law education designed must be based on a socio-legal paradigm approach. The socio-legal-based law education paradigm is not only aimed at producing law scholars who are capable of science and technology, but also able to develop law science alongside with social, law and ethics, and law and protection for indigenous peoples, as well as law that views human rights. 

The aim also should emphasize on producing law scholars who are adaptive to changes in society and the times. In addition, law education reform in Indonesia is expected to be able to bring closer to the reality of the work of law that occurs amid society rather than just studying law through legislation. Furthermore, the law education should be able to provide a comprehensive view in the context of preparing law education curriculum and interactive learning.

Furthermore, faculty of law, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya (FH UMSurabaya) is one of the parts from well-known Muhammadiyah college which carries the mandate in the vision of higher education, such as education, research, community service and Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyaan. Additionally, socio-legal short course is contribute for developing of legal skill it’s not only in Indonesia, but also into international community. One of the measure, with socio-legal international short-course 2023.
